A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures. They are often performed by both dentists and endodontists, though an endodontist specializes in this and related treatments, making them uniquely qualified and experienced.
People often dread root canals, but advancements in technology have made the procedure shorter and more comfortable. However, if you are wondering what alternatives there are to root canal treatment, here are some options to consider.
What is Root Canal Therapy?
The root canal is the inner chamber of a tooth. It begins at the base of the crown and extends the length of the root. Inside the root canal is the dental pulp, soft tissue made up of nerves and blood vessels that help the tooth develop and thrive.
When a tooth is damaged due to decay or injury, the dental pulp is susceptible to inflammation and infection. Root canal treatment is designed to eliminate or prevent infection in order to restore the health of the tooth. This is typically the best option to save the tooth.
During the root canal procedure a small hole is made in the top of the tooth in order to access the root canal space. The dental pulp is removed from the tooth and the root canal is cleared out and disinfected. Then the tooth is filled with a replacement material that seals the inner root canal space. A crown is typically placed over the tooth to complete the restoration.
Alternatives to Root Canal Treatment
- No treatment. In some cases, a tooth that needs root canal therapy is not causing someone significant pain. Delaying treatment is always an option but not always advised as this could lead to increased pain, swelling, or spread of infection if not addressed. Antibiotics and pain medication can sometimes help with symptoms, but they will not remove the source of that inflammation or infection which is coming from the inside of the tooth.
- Vital Pulp Therapy. This is generally only an option in younger patients where the pulp of the tooth is mildly inflamed. A bioceramic filling material can be placed on an exposed pulp to try to promote healing of the remaining tissue. In these situations, it is important to monitor the tooth for any progression of inflammation in case root canal therapy is indicated in the future.
- Extraction. Another option is to have the tooth extracted. Dentists and endodontists only recommend extraction as a last resort when the tooth is unable to be saved by other means. Tooth replacement options such as implants, bridges, or dentures can be discussed with your general dentist.
